River Bank
River Bank
Working on the river bank, October 9th
This photograph was taken from the Didsbury golf course side of the river and faces downstream. On the extreme left can be seen four men who are working on the final stretch of the rebuilt river bank. The bank has been prepared to be covered with an erosion control blanket – a light green fabric with seeds embedded within it and through which they will be able to grow. The blanket is rolled down the slope and then cut, in strips several yards wide. 5½ inch pegs are then hammered into it to keep it in place. The covering is biodegradable and a similar operation was completed on the other side of the bank.
This photo was taken at about 4.00pm on a day of heavy cloud. In chatting to one of the men, I was told that he lived in Halifax and his daily journey to and from work took between 75 minutes and two hours. On this particular day he was finishing work at 6.00pm – almost in the dark.
Another task still to be done was the laying of a footway atop the bank.

Landscaping the bank, October 9th
Taken from the Didsbury golf course side of the river and looking upstream, this photograph shows work being done in landscaping the newly built bank on the bend of the river. Note the many large boulders to minimise erosion and undercutting of the bank.
