Changing Hut Remains
Concrete slab – remains of base of former cricketers’ changing hut
This is situated at the top of the bank in Simon Field near to the wall close to the junction of Ford Lane and Fordbank Road. Measuring approximately fifteen feet by six feet, this concrete base is all that remains of a changing hut used, it is believed, by Green End Cricket Club from as long ago as the 1940s. The wooden hut was of a mock-Tudor style with black and white vertical stripes and was sometimes visible in the distant background on team photographs taken of Burnage Old Boys Football Club in the 1950s and ‘60s.
At one time – like in the late 1970s and early 1980s – an early morning peep over the wall revealed about half a dozen sheep snuggling up against the wall after resting there overnight; the sheep roamed the huge field at will.
