River Bank Operations
River Bank Operations
Before the end of the third week in December most of the work on the construction site had been done. The workers had departed; the site cabins had been removed; all machinery and equipment had been removed from the site itself, with just a few awaiting transportation; no-parking cones had been removed; the crossing gates on Stenner Lane were closed and locked; and the site tracks laid for heavy vehicles had been taken up and removed. On the 19th December the footpath atop the river embankment was opened, the last of the machinery was loaded on to heavy haulage vehicles and taken away, and the Didsbury Sports Ground car park was cleansed.
The following photographs were taken on 19th December and feature various aspects relating to the river bank work which was coming to its completion.

These were among the last pieces of equipment to be removed from the construction site. They are pictured being loaded onto heavy haulage vehicles.
Opening of footway atop the river bank
This view, looking upstream and with Fletcher Moss playing fields to the left, shows the newly constructed footway on its first day of opening. The path, made out of compacted broken stones, variously measures just over five feet in width – approximately 1.6 metres. A temporary wooden fence, comprising four-foot-high wooden posts at 12-foot intervals and linked with two lines of thin blue rope, has been erected to protect the embankment, left, which was seeded weeks earlier and now shows signs of new grass growing. Similarly, the embankment, right, also shows new grass growing. The new path was a welcome relief to pedestrians as Stenner Lane – used for months as a detour route – was extremely muddy and wet at this time and necessitated the wearing of wellington boots.

Mud and water everywhere. Metal fencing still in place. Presumably there are plans for the ground to eventually be fully restored to its parkland beauty when the conditions are suitable.
