Adorned pillar box, corner of Fordbank Road and Dene Road, December 2021
This lovely nativity scene was created by one of the many so-called ‘yarnbombers’ in a craze that has been ripping through the country during the pandemic. A ‘yarnbomber’ is someone who knits, crochets or needle-felts something, anything – such as a nativity scene. Also referred to as ‘craftivists’ they bring cheer to street corners by topping the red pillar boxes with knitted festive scenes. The operation is usually quite covert, with the craftivist often attaching their creation under cover of darkness. Local residents usually have no notion of it until the sun comes up the following morning. Locals are then pleasantly surprised at what they see. The creations are made out of acrylic wool because real wool would shrink in the rain.

A recital of familiar Christmas carol tunes was performed by Bill Birkhead on keyboard and Viv Birkhead on flute and was watched by a small gathering of local residents who were also treated to mulled wine and mince pies. Note social distancing.
