Ford Lane
Roadshow at Didsbury Sports Ground clubhouse
‘Sell your old and unwanted jewellery and much more,’ was the message to local residents and beyond. Old, vintage and antique items could be assessed and bought by a team of experts in exchange for cash.
Club officials, members and volunteers had worked extremely hard since the flood to restore the clubhouse to be fit for use – a testament indeed to their commitment and dedication.

Ford Lane street lighting
For many years serious concerns were expressed about the lack of street lighting at the end of Ford Lane, from Fordbank Road down to Didsbury Sports Ground. Residents had raised concerns about how dark it was, and the need for additional lighting.
Despite numerous attempts by local councillors and the Fordbank Residents Association to persuade the city council to install some additional lighting, this initiative was at first not supported by the council.
However, in 2022 an additional pot of money (the Local Investment Fund) was made available in each ward. Councillor John Leach put forward the Ford Lane lighting scheme as a priority for Didsbury West. The proposal was costed, agreement was reached and the go-ahead was given.
Two lamp posts were erected, each providing much light as can be seen in the photograph. Additional lighting is also provided by the nearby DSG clubhouse, the front of which has five lights shining towards the car park as well as a couple of lights on the side of the building. Further illumination is provided on the opposite site of the lane in the form of a motion sensor security light fixed to the wall to the right of the private garage; this flicks on as someone walks past and gives off a very powerful burst of light.

Old route of Ford Lane
This part of the lane is now a backwater of the realigned Ford Lane, although the walls on both sides of the lane remain. Note metal barriers to block off vehicles and wall to the right which leans somewhat.
Dog sign
Several of these signs are displayed on the estate, usually on lamp posts, although most are now faded and in a poor state after years of being exposed to the elements. They serve as a polite reminder to the many dog walkers – both local and from beyond – to help maintain the neatness and cleanliness of the area by clearing up any dog faeces made by their pets on pavements, roads and grass verges. Most dog walkers – if not all – carry pick-up pouches for this purpose and dispose of them at home, although a tiny minority toss them into waste skips much to the annoyance of builders and other craftsmen working on local properties.
