Harefield Drive
Harefield Drive
Plans/layout of houses built after the war
Included in this section are a couple of examples to illustrate the original layout of many of the houses built on Granville Gardens, Westmorland Road, Ford Lane and Fordbank Road (nr junction with Ford Lane). The Harefield Drive example shows the layout of a late 1940s’ house and features bay windows. Other houses on the same road are similar to the Granville Gardens layout and were built a few years later.

Construction of houses on Harefield Drive, early 1950s
This interesting photo, kindly donated by Neil Roland, was taken from the back of number 35 and shows the progress made. Note the position of the back door, coal bunker and style of windows. Number 35 was bought for £1,676 when completed in 1952.

The house with the small back porch and garage is number 23 and was built in the late 1940s. Note the position of back doors and coal bunkers. Note also the builders’ rubble strewn across the ground. The new householders would have had their work cut out in landscaping their steep back gardens which extended down to the allotments. Over the years many residents of Harefield Drive have enjoyed many hours of cultivating crops on the allotments, which they have been able to access via a gate at the bottom of their garden. The numbers of the houses shown are, from left:
33, 31 & 29, 27 & 25, 23 & 21, 19 & 17.
