Another feature of the 1950s – and later – was the use of bicycles, often with specialised large front carriers or baskets, for local deliveries of groceries, milk and other goods. Most were two-wheelers but some had three wheels. These delivery bicycles would have been a common sight locally. The Co-op was among local retailers to showcase this vital part of the local shopping experience, as were bakers and butchers in the village.
Interestingly, modern Britain appears to have turned the clock back somewhat in the sense that fast-moving electric bikes now carry orders of hot food to houses and whizz up and down our roads, not to mention along pavements too.
