Holt House
Holt House
Holt House, Dene Road, under construction, 1959
These flats were built on the corner of Ford Lane and Dene Road, on the site once reserved for the proposed St Catherine’s church. They were named after the philanthropist, Sir Edward Holt, whose father was responsible for founding the Holt Radium Institute at Withington.
Holt House, 1961
This photograph was taken from the junction of Ford Lane and Deneford Road. These single and two-person flats were built by the trustees of the Edward Holt Trust for the accommodation of elderly people who had been engaged in service for the community during their working life. It was completed in 1960 and received a Civic Trust Award, Class 1, the following year. The first occupants are believed to have been retired nurses who had lived-in at Christies hospital during their career.
Incidentally, behind the opened gate can be seen part of the original boundary wall of the estate as it extends towards Dene Road and beyond.
